SwimMAC Swimmers Assist At Camp Soar

camp soar 1Camp Soar, hosted by the Levine Jewish Community Center, kicked off it's activities yesterday Monday June 15th. Campers are aged 10 to 50+. They enjoy a day of activities such as bowling, tennis, Bocce Ball, soccer, volleyball, arts and crafts, and of course swimming! The Jewish Community Center has three pools two of which are outside where the campers swim. This camp also serves as a feeder and recruiting ground for the Mecklenburg Area Special Olympic Teams.

JCC Aquatics Director Peter Perers (former SwimMAC swimmer and SwimMAC coach, now SwimMAC Masters swimmer) invited the SwimMAC team to participate as pool pals. Essentially our swimmers get in the pool and play, teach and encourage the campers. There are three sessions of swimmers that come to the pool 1:00pm to 3:30pm this week Monday through Thursday.

18 years ago, SwimMAC had the USA Special Olympian of the Year move in from Texas and join the SwimMAC team. His name was Sam Reid. He was 22 years old when he joined SwimMAC and he was at camp yesterday! Coach Patty had a great re-union with Sam, including many freestyle races across the pool!

SwimMAC swimmers participating in yesterday's session were Katherine Plevka, Erin Gaeckle, Austin Snyder, Jonathan Peterson, Kristina Grayson, and Coach Patty. The camp runs through Thursday and we have many more SwimMAC athletes and SwimMAC Masters ready to take the plunge and play!
