SwimMAC Swimmers A Part of the Southern Zone Select Camp

On May 21st I had the chance to be part of Team USA at the Southern Zone Select Camp in Louisville, Kentucky along with Kevin Glenn and Collin Higgins. Selection to this camp was based on age, IMX points, and fastest swimmers in each Olympic event, not including the 50 free.

I learned a lot during the five days at the camp. Along with challenging training sessions, we attended many educational meetings. During these meetings we talked about nutrition, goal setting, and Olympic team progressions. The coaching staff (including Coach Alan) talked to us about the importance of good nutritional habits and good recovery habits during training and competition. One tip I learned is the need to snack on something healthy (protein bars, chocolate milk, etc) within thirty minutes after each practice and then follow that with a meal. I learned that a well balance diet for a swimmer consist of 60% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 25% fat.

We also talked about setting goals, both long term and short term goals. You need short term goals to help you get to the long term goal. It is very helpful to set public goals which you can share with your teammates. Teammates can then support and encourage each other to meet their goals.

The main thing they taught us is to stay positive, work hard, have fun, and cheer your teammates on even during practice.
